HIGH GARROXA

Catalonia in its purest form

On the way to the land of adventure!

The rugged relief of this region of the pre-Pyrenees has drawn

sumptuous landscapes dotted with very dispersed habitats

of isolated farms and peaceful hamlets.

This region bordering Vallespir, long landlocked, has preserved

throughout the centuries his whole personality.

Its biological richness and its thousand-year-old historical heritage have contributed

to its classification as an "Area of Natural and Historical Interest" and Zone

Special Protection for birds within the Natura 2000 Network.

Perfectly laid out paths connect farmhouses, crops, pastures, Romanesque churches and hermitages in a landscape, crossing deep wooded valleys crisscrossed by crystal-clear rivers.

Wild settings and authenticity are the order of the day for a program

that we adapt to your interests and availability.

History & Legends

The transhumance paths and mule tracks were for a long time the only link between the farmhouses scattered throughout the mountains, the hamlets ("veinats" in Catalan) and the only two villages in Alta Garrotxa, Beget and Oix. In the taverns and typical "hostals" at the crossroads, local news and often contraband goods were exchanged, particularly with neighboring Vallespir in French territory. The wars of succession of the Kingdom of Spain, as well as the adventures of the highwaymen, the terrible "Trabucaires," enlivened evenings by the fireside. Mythical places like the Bassegoda massif or the hermitage of Sant Aniol have inspired painters and writers. Today, we relive the atmosphere of yesteryear by discovering the precious legacy of generations of women and men who shaped and protected this unique environment.
